About 6 years ago I stopped trying to sync non-Apple devices and just caved in and bought an iPhone, using iCloud to get my stuff to sync properly. It always left contacts out, double listed other contacts, repeated / added the same contact notes again and again, etc. All the while attempting to Sync my contacts with my Apple Mac (OS X) computers.
